Mission, The
“Mission: Impossible 3,” directed by J.J. Abrams, features the latest adventures of super-spy Ethan Hunt as he faces his most personal mission yet. Abrams, the creator of the highly successful TV series “Alias” and “Lost,” co-wrote the screenplay with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Together, they deliver a tight script with a solid plot, three-dimensional characters, and some much needed humor and emotion absent from earlier installments. Abrams infuses the decade-old franchise with new energy and fresh vitality, delivering spectacular set pieces, elaborate plot twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat, exciting action stunts that serve the story, nifty spy gadgets, and stunning special effects – proving that he’s just as talented at directing for the big screen as he is for television. Given the film’s troubled production history, this mission would have been next to impossible without him.
Abrams casts the film with strong actors, stages the action ingeniously, and stays on track with the story while remaining true to the smart concept and best aspects of the original TV series. He cleverly sets up the structure of his film by book ending it with a brutal pivotal scene that, in the opening sequence, establishes the central tension of the film and lets the audience know that something vital is at stake. The tension never lets up until the film’s final moments when we are treated to an unexpectedly arresting payoff. In between, Abrams fills in the details via an engaging and involved flashback. The action and intrigue of the earlier MI installments are still there, including the exciting chases (helicopter, boat, motorcycle, foot), visually stunning explosions, exotic international locales (Shanghai, Berlin, Rome), and dangerous bad guys. But unlike his predecessors, Abrams focuses more on Ethan’s personal life, his interpersonal relationships with fellow IMF members, and his vulnerability as a character -- who Ethan is as a man rather than as an element in a plot. Despite Abrams best efforts, however, we never lose sight of the fact that this is a star vehicle for Cruise who treats the material as such.
When the film begins, Special Agent Ethan Hunt has retired from the dangerous front lines and now trains new IMF agents, a career change that has opened up new possibilities for him in his personal life including marriage. But Ethan cannot tell his new bride, Julia (Michelle Monaghan) the whole truth, and he lives with the terror of what could happen. He is enticed back to active duty by Agency Director Brassel (Laurence Fishburne) and his right hand man Musgrave (Billy Crudup) when his former trainee and new IMF agent, Lindsay Farris (Keri Russell) is captured by master criminal Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman), a deadly international weapons and information trader. When Lindsay is brutally killed, Ethan takes the loss both personally and professionally. With his crack team comprised of computer expert Luther Strickell (Ving Rhames reprising his role), Irish transportation expert Declan (Jonathan Rhys Meyers), and the elegant Zhen (glamorous martial arts star Maggie Q), Ethan sets out to track down Davian in a risky attempt to stop him before he hatches his destructive plans. Along the way, Ethan must uncover a mole working inside the operation and find an evil and mysterious rabbit’s foot. When Davian uses Ethan's wife as bait, Ethan accepts his most impossible mission ever to save the world and the woman he loves.
In this third installment of the spy thriller franchise, Abrams creates new conflict for Ethan by probing previously unexplored elements of his character, showing how he faces the challenge of reconciling his personal life with the dangers of what he does professionally. He also creates (and Hoffman delivers) a terrifyingly dark and chilling villain who is neither arch nor a caricature, but comes across as a real person who is blunt, savage, and a worthy adversary to the bold and heroic Ethan. To survive personally and professionally, Ethan must outsmart the elusive and ruthless Davian. Abrams also adds new dimension to the relationship between Ethan and Luther to reveal a genuine friendship filled with wonderful irony, humor and finesse that is especially evident during a conversation between them that takes place in the midst of a dangerous mission. The core of the film is very much a personal story compared to the blank slate Ethan’s character appeared to be in the previous two MI films. And Abrams does an expert job weaving the personal moments into the film’s overall action.
Cruise delivers a charismatic performance along with some exceptional stunt work -- catapulting from one immense skyscraper to another, leaping off tall buildings, scaling walls, navigating elevator shafts, being run over by a jackknifed semi, and escaping a rocket attack. The film’s strong ensemble cast works well together with Cruise in the lead. Hoffman, who has never been in an action film before, does a remarkable job, giving his character unusual depth and dimension and proving to be one of the toughest, most sadistic villains Ethan has ever gone up against. Hoffman brings a sense of inner life to his character and, in the process, challenges Cruise to dig deeper as an actor to reveal the most vulnerable elements of his character. It’s fun watching these distinctly different actors put their unique talents (Cruise’s charisma and tremendous physicality and Hoffman’s great range and vocal dexterity) to work in service of their characters.
“Mission: Impossible 3’s” technical elements are uniformly solid. Director of photography Dan Mindel and production designer Scott Chambliss collaborate with Abrams to create a visual style that is natural, realistic, and gritty, using film locations that are integral to the story. They achieve the effects in-camera, as opposed to CGI, with Cruise performing many of his own stunts and lending credibility to the overall look of the film. Action director Vic Armstrong, who designed the stunts with Cruise in mind, provides a seamless transition between the action and the rest of the film. The film’s major set pieces include the Vatican, a breathtaking nocturnal rooftop sequence in Shanghai, a huge factory sequence in Berlin, and an explosive sequence on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Editors Mary Jo Markey and Maryann Brandon keep the pace unrelenting no matter how incoherent the plot becomes at times. Colleen Atwood’s costume design is impressive. Escapism has never looked so stylish.
Composer Michael Giacchino’s compelling score drives the action and matches perfectly the conceptual and emotional tone of the film. Kanye West reinterprets the iconic, explosive, bass-heavy Mission: Impossible theme, originally written by Lalo Schifrin, and gives it a more contemporary edge while keeping it classic and familiar. His dark, melodic version sounds mean and puts you in exactly the right frame of mind.
As the first of the summer season’s blockbusters, “Mission: Impossible 3” is one fast-paced, action-packed film that fans won’t want to miss. Cruise gives one of his best MI performances ever, and Abrams proves in his feature film debut that he is indeed a creative force with a vision. Together they turn the spy thriller on its ear, make your pulse pound, and prove beyond a doubt that this franchise still has legs. Grab your popcorn and enjoy this high-octane, rollercoaster ride of pure escapism.
